Platform

Hi and Thank-you for taking the time to visit my website.

I am a hard working and passionate individual, which I believe is key to promoting the student agenda. As VP external I will ensure that our voice is heard at all levels of government to provide the best opportunities for U of C students. My platform centers on raising awareness, continued political advocacy and student engagement.

Campus
-          It is important to stand united as students and I believe that it is awareness events that brings together the University community that helps call for action and change. As VP External I would engage the student body to increase participation from students and to raise awareness of the External portfolio.
-          I want to commit to connecting with students through attending events around campus. I believe that VP external is required to go away from campus periodically but it is important to engage with students on the reforms that VP external is working towards.
-          This engagement will include a day of action on issues such as student debt and affordable housing, included vital information is SU emails to the student body as well as engaging with NUTV and the Gauntlet.

Locally
-          Secondary suites has fallen out of the spot light but will soon return to the agenda requiring advocacy from students to ensure affordable housing for university students.

Provincially
-          Alberta has undergone major changes and will be continuing to change as the Premier is expected to call an election in Spring 2012. After this election it will be important to make connections with newly elected officials and present our issues and concerns.
-          The Alberta Government announced reforms to the Student Loan policies that make access to these loans easier. I believe that this announcement represents the power of student advocacy and the need for constant dialogue, which I will continue.
-          Working with our counterparts on the Council of Alberta University Students, I will continue to work hard to close the tuition loophole that is present in the Tuition Fee Policy.
-          The Alberta Government just announced the 2012 Budget, which guaranteed 2% increase to post secondary education. They also mentioned the achievements of the technical graduates from Alberta but failed to mention that Alberta still has the lowest enrolment in postsecondary education. It will be necessary to keep educating the government and make sure that our academic pursuits are not belittled for technical achievements.

Federally
-          I will continue to work with the Canadian Alliance of Student Association to increase the support for the Canadian Student Loan Program and push for reforms that have occurred in Alberta to happen of the federal side as well.
-          I will also advocate for tuition and textbook affordability.

VOTE KOURTNEY PRATT VP EXTERNAL.

Little bit about Kourtney Pratt

Kourtney is a fourth year double major in Political Science and Dance. Kourtney is originally from Camrose, Alberta graduating from high school in 2008. Throughout high school she was active within student government, leadership and debate..  After auditioning into the Dance program at the U of C and being accepted she decided to take a leap of faith and come to Calgary, which was away from most of her high school friends. Looking to get involved on campus she joined Alpha Gamma Delta in September of her first year. In her second year she picked up her double major with Political Science, as she has always been passionate and exited about government. During school growing up she was the only 11 year old of her class to know who the first Prime Minister of Canada was……John A Macdonald. Adding Political Science allowed her to extend her education into something else that she is passionate about.. She continued to be active on campus through volunteering for Orientation week, Safewalk and as Peer helper for the Sophomore Leadership Program.  She has held throughout her university career a variety of positions within Alpha Gamma Delta including Chapter President.  Currently she sits on the Students’ Union Policy Development and Review Committee. During the summer months she has worked with Legal Aid Alberta in various capacities. Growing up Kourtney has been exposed to Politics through her parents who have been involved in municipal politics. Kourtney has been described as a hard-working and dedicated individual and wants to work hard for the students of the University of Calgary a group that over the last 4 years have become very proud to call herself a part of.
